Sundog Ranch Transfer Station: Prescott's primary dump
The Sundog Ranch Transfer Station is where most Prescott residents and haulers bring waste that does not fit in regular curbside collection. Located at 2800 Sundog Ranch Road, it is the main disposal site for the City of Prescott and handles everything from household garbage to construction debris.

Transfer station fees
The transfer station charges by weight, which means you drive over a scale when entering and again when leaving. Here are the current rates.
| Material Type | Rate | Minimum Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Solid waste (household junk, furniture, misc.) | $106 per ton | $20 |
| Clean brush and green waste | $77 per ton | $15 |
| Clean concrete, dirt, and rock | $50 per ton | $20 |
| Tires (passenger) | Not accepted | N/A |
The $20 minimum covers roughly 400 pounds of solid waste, which is more than enough for a regular pickup truck load of household junk. If you are doing a small cleanout, chances are you will pay just the minimum. Bigger loads like full garage cleanouts or renovation debris can run $50 to $150+ depending on weight.
What the transfer station accepts
Household garbage and clutter, old furniture, mattresses, carpeting, wood and lumber, drywall and sheetrock, roofing materials, yard waste and brush, concrete and masonry, metal and scrap, cardboard and paper products. All loads must be properly secured, contained, and covered per city code.
What they will NOT accept
The transfer station has a specific list of prohibited items. Tires of any kind are not accepted. Liquid paint, solvents, and chemicals are prohibited. Propane tanks, compressed gas cylinders, and explosives are banned. Freon-containing appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners need a CFC removal certificate before they will be accepted. Batteries, motor oil, and antifreeze should go to designated collection events instead.

Free woodchips at the transfer station
Here is something most Prescott residents do not know: the transfer station offers free woodchips for landscaping, gardening, and weed control. They are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Bring your own containers or truck and load up as much as you need at no charge. They are great for garden beds, pathways, and moisture retention in Prescott's dry climate.
Prescott's bulk trash pickup program
The City of Prescott launched an appointment-based bulk trash collection program in June 2025. Residential utility customers get one free bulk pickup per calendar year. You can schedule it through PrescottRecycles.com. Each item must weigh 50 pounds or less individually. They will not pick up hazardous waste or Freon-containing appliances, but it is a solid option for a few pieces of furniture or large household items you need gone.
Where to donate in Prescott
Before you haul anything to the dump, consider whether someone else could use it. Donating keeps usable items out of the landfill, supports local organizations, and may qualify you for a tax deduction.
Goodwill (3 locations)
Prescott and Prescott Valley have three Goodwill stores, each with a donation center. The Iron Springs Road location at 1375 Iron Springs Road in Prescott is open Monday through Saturday 9 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 9 PM. The Lakeview Plaza location at 3155 Lakeview Plaza Lane in Prescott is the newest store with daily hours of 9 AM to 9 PM. The Prescott Valley store is at 7620 E. State Route 69 and operates daily with varying hours.
Goodwill accepts clothing, shoes, accessories, household goods, small furniture, electronics, small appliances, books, and toys. They do not accept large furniture items, mattresses, or anything broken or heavily stained. Drop-off is free and they will give you a donation receipt for tax purposes.

Free donation pickup service available
The ReStore is one of Prescott's best-kept secrets for getting rid of larger items. They accept building materials, cabinets, doors, windows, hardware, lighting fixtures, furniture, and working appliances. The big advantage over Goodwill is that they will come to you. Their free pickup service means you do not have to load anything into your own vehicle. Just call to schedule. All proceeds go toward building affordable housing in the Tri-City region.
They do not accept clothing or food items. Everything they take needs to be in sellable condition.
A note about the Salvation Army
The Salvation Army closed its Prescott thrift store in October 2021 and as of 2026 has not reopened a location in the area. If you are looking for local thrift store donation options, Goodwill and the Habitat ReStore are your best choices in Prescott.

Yavapai County transfer stations
If you live outside Prescott city limits in places like Williamson Valley, Paulden, or other unincorporated parts of Yavapai County, there are eight county-operated transfer stations located throughout the region. These are managed by the Yavapai County Solid Waste Division and accept household waste and recyclables. Fees and hours vary by location, so call the Yavapai County Public Works office at (928) 771-3197 for details on the station nearest you.
Hazardous waste disposal
There is no permanent household hazardous waste facility in the Prescott area, which can make disposing of chemicals, paint, and certain electronics tricky. The city holds periodic household hazardous waste collection events that require advance registration. Prescott Valley also launched a pilot curbside hazardous waste pickup program in 2025.
For common items: latex paint can go in the regular trash if it is completely dried out (add kitty litter to speed up drying). Oil-based paint must go to a hazardous waste event. Car batteries can be returned to auto parts stores like AutoZone and O'Reilly, which accept them for free. Rechargeable batteries should be saved for hazardous waste events or taken to a Batteries + Bulbs retailer.
Recycling options in Prescott
Curbside recycling in Prescott is included with your city utility service. Blue bins accept paper, cardboard, plastic containers (#1 and #2), aluminum and tin cans, and glass bottles. Do not include plastic bags, styrofoam, or food-contaminated containers. The transfer station previously had recycling dumpsters on-site, but these have been temporarily removed during current road construction. Check the City of Prescott website for updates on when recycling returns to the transfer station.
For electronic waste, the transfer station accepts most electronics but charges the standard per-ton rate. For large quantities of e-waste or specialized items, contact the Yavapai County Solid Waste Division for guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Only with a CFC removal certificate showing the Freon has been professionally recovered. Without that certificate, the transfer station will turn you away. A professional junk removal service can handle the Freon removal and disposal for you.
The Sundog Ranch Transfer Station does not accept tires. Tire shops like Discount Tire and Big O Tires typically charge $3 to $5 per tire for disposal when you bring them in. Some auto shops will accept them as well.
The city does not currently offer free dump days at the transfer station. However, the bulk trash pickup program gives residential customers one free collection per year. Some community organizations also hold occasional cleanup events.
The cheapest option is hauling it to the transfer station yourself ($20 minimum). If you do not have a truck, using the city's free annual bulk pickup or hiring a junk removal service (typically $75 to $125 for a single mattress) are your next best options.
